My 'personal' trends leading into 2018
It feels as through 2018 should be halfway through but it's only the end of January! I've been very busy working through new prints and reaffirming my new love affair with my iPad Pro. While there's plenty of posts talking about market trends, I can already see my own personal trends for the year making their mark on my designs.
There's always another depth and layer to take a print to with texture. For the last couple of years I was fairly clean and minimalistic in my approach but I'm now very much addicted to textured energy and values cropping up with my designs and adding that extra spice of emotion to a repeating pattern.
My relationship with abstract prints has been on the back burner until recently and I'm now fascinated with developing abstract florals, geometrics and conversational patterns. I think this is helped by allow myself more time to develop ideas, find inspiration and generate a plethora of sketches, collages, scraps and scribbles to pull from. It's become a creative investment that I am now totally committed to.
Colour has always been a major aspect of my design process and something I consciously gather together in advance of nearly all my designs. My relationship with colour is beginning to refine now as I find my favourite tricks and reference points to guide me to that sweet spot with a colour palette really polishes the design into something entirely sellable.
Colour, texture and abstract play are my main personal trends for this year. What are yours looking to be? What were your personal trends last year?
