New Vector Pattern Available - Geometric Hummingbird - Case Study
I wanted to dig a little deeper into the geometric style I've applied to my recent hummingbird print and share the details of how I created the hummingbirds using overlapping geometric shapes. Overall, the look is quite contemporary and it feels like a good fit for a modern woodland collection.
When picking a layout for a single-subject pattern, I often enjoy creating a sense of movement (as I have previously with my Swans design) and in this tossed pattern, the sense of motion is almost of these birds hovering precisely in accordance with one another. This inspiration came naturally from the movement of the hummingbird in real life.
The colour palette is very vibrant and uses a lot of contrast between the geometric shapes forming the bird and so the background is soft and cool to prevent the design being overwhelming. An interesting challenge I found was making sure that the colour palette was kept quite tight with lots of small, contrasting shapes. I used transparent geometric outlines while developing the design and later sliced these shapes at their intersecting points and filled each smaller shape with colour from a small palette. In this way, the shapes feel more organic because there are genuine invisible lines connecting the circles and this appears more natural for the eye to follow.

Technical information about this design
If you're interested in this design, it is available for both royalty licensing or exclusive flat fee purchase at the moment. The actual design file you'll receive is going to be an Adobe Illustrator file which means this pattern was created using vector shapes and is completely re-scalable without loss of quality which is super handy for production.
I've kept a concise colour palette across this design making it very easy to update if needed for production requirements or co-ordinated products.
The file is layered with the original layout, a perfect square block ready for repeat and a pre-made pattern swatch that repeats and scales within Adobe Illustrator so it really is all ready to go.
